Dear friends,
Welcome to our September update on the impact your generous contributions have made in supporting the care of sick children at Kagando Hospital. Under the dedicated leadership of Nurse Jones, the children’s ward has continued to provide crucial care. In August alone there were 107 admissions, with children suffering from a range of conditions such as pneumonia, sepsis, diarrhoea, malaria, anaemia, and malnutrition. Sadly, despite the best efforts of the medical team, we lost three young lives to severe anaemia, pneumonia, and malnutrition.
Due to the ongoing travel restrictions to the region, which is currently not recommended for non-essential travel by the UK government, visits from Friends of Kagando have not been possible. However, thanks to technology,
we’ve been able to stay in contact with the dedicated staff at Kagando Hospital.
Joshua, a key member of the ‘Rwenzori Women for Health’ program has been keeping us informed. He shares that both the families of the sick children and the hospital staff deeply appreciate the subsidies made possible by your contributions to the C100 fund. These subsidies have been a lifeline for families who would otherwise be unable to afford the care their children need. The doctors and nurses are grateful for the continued support you provide to
the community they live and work in.
However, a new challenge has emerged following a recent visit from the Ugandan Ministry of Health. They identified several issues in the neonatal unit, which cares for premature and critically ill babies. Most of these problems are
related to the physical state of the ward due to deteriorating infrastructure, including cracked floors, peeling walls and damaged windows, which compromise safety and hygiene. Key improvements recommended are replacing the floors with durable materials, repainting walls, and installing modern windows for better ventilation and security. These changes require urgent attention to ensure the vital service provided can continue. The cost of all this has been
estimated to be £6300.
Would you be willing to make a contribution to help address these issues and ensure that premature and sick newborns at Kagando Hospital continue to receive the care they desperately need?
If you would like to help, please make a donation via this website, and email us via the ‘Contact Us’ button to let us know your gift is for this project.
Your support makes a world of difference. Thank you for your ongoing
generosity and compassion.
With gratitude and prayers,
Liz and Toks (Kagando Trustees)
